Once knees goes up you high back step over their ankle, not to mention bear trap is fairly straightforward to defend and less dangerous than inside position. This was first and foremost to address avoiding kani basami. 👍

I’ve been working with my son on preventing/escaping side control and this video was extremely helpful in that it covers the many things opponents do to maintain the position and how to counter them. Thanks for this resource.

I wear an A1H in the aeroweave and it has shrunk ever so slightly through time but fits pretty well still. Would you recommend buying a size up in the valiant gi since it shrinks so much?

Blue was great for me...Purple has been 7 years of impostor's syndrome and been injured repeatedly by giant white belts. Found some great take aways from the video. Thank you.

thank you bc it made me realize that no one in my gym stay long enough to even get a purple belt. I’m glad i left that gym they try to have me come back and talk to me. but if someone was a purple belt they didn’t get it at my gym only the professional fighters had a high ranking belt no one else did there were one purple belt the two coaches were black belt and a brown belt and two purple belt students the rest were white belt or blue belt and there was only one blue belt lol. but the boxing there was great i did it for 4 months and had great boxing coaches but the bjj room was toxic and rude but all the boxers in the other room were so respectful and nice. but they barely had anyone doing bjj but a lot of people doing boxing and no one showed up to gi jujitsu besides me and three other people

Perspective is everything, I'm a 35 year old dad of two who's just doing this for fun, I'm not trying to go to ADCC. I won my last comp but even in my first comp where I didn't medal I was just happy to get out there and compete. In 30 years I'll be able to look back on competing and be glad I did it.

I feel like this is an expansion/extension of Ryan hall’s back attacks instructional from years ago. I mean that in the best possible way. Those videos changed my approach to jiu jitsu. I really enjoyed your instructional and look forward to working with this material.

It’s the training and knowledge you develop within a mindset… you can’t measure those things with a belt or anything else in the physical sense.

I find I learn a lot more rolling with people that are weaker and less skilled than me. I get to practice stuff other than defending. Against big guys with more skill, I’m just trying to survive as long as I can.

Does anyone else feel like leglocks are more to counter other grapplers than for self-defense? The positions I would do them from make me open to getting punched in the face if I'm not careful.

I see everyone in the comments missed the part where he said knee on stomach or don’t practice jiujitsu so you don’t know what that is. Of course if you pull a full mount or side mount in a multiple attacker scenario that is stupid. But knee on stomach allows quick submissions, punches to the face, and the ability to disengage for incoming additional attackers.
